Cees van Rij (1967) grew up in a mixed dairy and crops farm in Rockanje, South Holland. After completing the Agricultural Secondary School, he studied Tropical Agriculture at the International Agricultural College Larenstein. Amongst other things, Cees worked for five years in Ecuador for the national agricultural organisation FENOCIN and for one of its regional sections. He was involved in drawing up and supervising programmes and projects concerning agro-tourism, agricultural extension, credit, gender and youth.

Before being posted in Ecuador, he had already worked as a volunteer for the predecessor of Agriterra, the Paulo Freire Foundation (PFS). Since 2002, he works for Agriterra, first as a project officer, since 2005 as a liaison officer for organisations mostly in East Africa and Latin America. Since April 2011 Cees is team manager of the team agribusiness.
