More and more countries recognize the importance of strong farmer's organisations in the fight against hunger and poverty. An increasingly higher number of organisations wish to take part in the professionalisation of farmers associations, so that those can defend the interests of their members. This is what AgriCord also notices, the alliance organisation gathering the agri-agencies, organisations comparable with Agriterra focused on agricultural development cooperation. Three organisations from respectively Spain, Italy and Finland deposited a request to join AgriCord.

Until now, these three countries do not have any agri-agency within their reach. They have, however, national farmers organisations, comparable with LTO in the Netherlands: UPA in Spain, the CIA in Italy and MTK in Finland.

These three organisations are currently associate members with AgriCord. AgriCord coordinates collaboration between its members, in order to be able to help in the most effective possible way the farmers organisations that are established in developing countries.

The negotiations carried out with the Finnish government, for support of the programs of AgriCord, were finalized on Monday May 18 in Brussels, by the signature of an agreement, in presence of the vice-president of the European Economic and Social Committee in particular, the Finnish Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, representatives of LTO Nederland and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Finnish government has agreed to invest 1,6 million euros until 2010, to support the program of AgriCord called "Farmers Fighting Poverty". It is within expectations that new amounts will be transferred after 2010.
After the arrival of these three new organisations AgriCord will have the following nine members:
  • Afdi France
  • Agriterra Netherlands
  • IDACA Japan
  • SCC Sweden
  • UPA-DI Canada
  • UPA Spain
  • MTK Finland
  • Groupe Fert France
  • CIA Italy
