Team advocacy and innovation

Through advocacy the lonely voice is organised and can be heard. We work mostly with regional and national federations of farmers who have a clear understanding of the challenges facing their members. In this way farmers can become a body of strength and their negotiation power within, for instance, the value chain - dealing with seed suppliers, traders, distributors, consumers - rises significantly. It also allows farmers to make concerted and professional cases with government and legal bodies on such important topics as land rights and market regulation. Where cooperatives and federations would require additional financial or specialist assistance, the team could step in. Through our own intervention and by invoking the expertise of AgriProfocus (Netherlands), IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development), Dutch farmers' organisations and others, ambitions can be sharpened and targets more effectively reached.
Innovation is a new area for Agriterra, one in which farmers' organisations work on entrepreneurship according to the three p's: people, planet, profit. Sustaining livelihood in the rural areas for future generations is one of the main aims's. The youth has an important role here. Agriterra wants to stay as close as possible to the farmers at grassroots level while making a concrete contribution. One way for doing this is to encourage enterprising farmers' groups to use sustainable methods for food production and marketing. Agriterra has a special innovation fund to stimulate enterprising and innovative organisations of young and female farmers.
The team focuses on customers who envisage innovative trajectories with their farmer members. Because we cannot manage this on our own, Agriterra consciously chooses for cooperating with other organisation like Agri-ProFocus and IFAD.
