The bull Delta Butembo, named by Agriterra, recently moved to Russia. Its owner CRV (Cooperation for Cattle Improvement) has sold Butembo to Moskovskoye. The latter, a Moscow-based organisation is the largest Russian organisation in artificial insemination. Together with seven more bulls, top class bull Butembo went to the biggest country in the world, as was arranged in a plan for the improvement of the Russian dairy industry.

In November 2008 CRV and Moskovskoye signed a multi-year agreement. This liaison was created for the improvement of the Russian dairy industry and receives support from the Russian Agricultural Ministry. Alongside their initiative for CRV-sperm distribution on the Russian market, Moskovskoye has purchased eight breeding bulls from CRV, amongst which Delta Butembo.

Delta Butembo has been named after a community in the North-East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, named Butembo. This community is home to farmers’ organisation Sydip, an organisation aiming to improve the circumstances of the rural inhabitants. Sydip offers support to farmers in their attempts to increase and improve their production and to refine their marketing so that the producers’ income will rise. Also Sydip defends farmers’ rights and can act as an intermediary, for example in conflicts about land.

Butembo is one of many names Agriterra has provided to CRV. The cooperation between Agriterra and CRV dates from 2003. For its young bull breeding programme CNV needs names that can be used internationally. Agriterra is working in over 60 developing countries and thus has a large database of ‘tropical names’ that she is eager to promote. Over the years, Agriterra has provided a considerable number of names and CRV for every name they use, makes a donation to Agriterra projects for improvement of cattle in developing countries.
