HIV/AIDS in rural areas - A matter of cooperation

Naar aanleiding van de mededeling in de Adviesraad, dat er zeker extra aandacht voor het HIV/AIDS probleem moet komen, is er besloten een apart project op te zetten. Er bestaat intussen een beleidsnotitie, die ook vertaald is in het engels. AIDS constitutes a threat for rural development and food security. It has a devastating effect on the acquisition of agricultural knowledge, institutional strengthening of organizations and gender perspectives. The inadequate access to AIDS education and information as well as illiteracy are major reasons why the AIDS pandemic has such a major impact in rural areas. Although in recent years the understanding has grown that it is essential to combat AIDS in rural areas as well, the approach remains urban-biased. Agriterra considers that agricultural organizations can play a central role in a multisector approach of HIV/AIDS. Agricultural organizations emanate from the community, they know the community, and they know what initiatives are already being carried out and what problems there are. They can decide whether new initiatives (in the field of fighting HIV/AIDS and the consequences) will be useful and will meet with approval within the community.
