Sowing the seeds of renewal, year 2

The year 2004 is the second year of the 5-year strategic plan in the period 2003-2007. As a follow-up of the five-year strategic plan, which was formulated and adopted by KENFAP in mid 2003, there arose a need to develop a 3-year plan with activities, expected resource requirements and budget. The 3- year plan covering the period 2004 to 2006 was developed in a participatory planning workshop held in Nakuru in early December 2003 and attended by various KENFAP leaders, staff and partners who discussed and prioritised the activities to be implemented.
Recruitment of new members and empowering of farmers through capacity?building, timely access to useful information, better policies and improved marketing were chosen to be the main objectives for the new plan. In particular, the federation should make in-roads in the arid and semi-arid lands occupying about 75% of Kenya's total land area and providing the bulk of the country's red meat. The other focus will be deliberate attention and mainstreaming of gender in the agricultural sector since different members of the households contribute meaningfully in development of the ailing sector.
