Work area 4: management institutional development

Institutional development is about collaboration and competition of producers’ organisations with other actors in the arena of agricultural development.
The basic tenet of this work area is that “Producers’ organisations with sound internal organisation must also prove their internal capacities in the outside world (FFP p. 18). Institutional Development is a work area of strategic importance and crucial for achieving the core outcome level objective of FFP: an influential role of POs in society and economy in development countries. The Work Area ID addresses the capacity of farmers’ organisations to position themselves strategically in their external environment and to establish relations with government, private sector and civil society organisations, donors and other stakeholders, with the aim to improve service delivery to their members.

The Work area envisages activities and results at outcome and impact level. At the outcome level the focus is on product development and PO capacity strengthening. More than 10 operational tools will be developed and made available to PO’s. The aim of the tools that are developed is to support PO’s in establishing relations/alliances with other actors. 60 PO positioning projects are planned. These mainly concern apex organisations.
