Strengthening rural organisations for policy dialogue in South America

COPROFAM, created in 1994, is a regional network of 12 national organisations representing approximately 350 second-tier family farmers organizations in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. It is estimated that in 2008 20 percent of family farmers in the Southern Cone region, that is 1.4 million farmer families, are affiliated to COPROFAM . Although it does not represent all organizations of family farmers in MERCOSUR, COPROFAM has institutionalized its role as an important advocate for small-scale agriculture in regional and international platforms, while its members advocate at the national level in all member countries.
The target group for the proposed Programme is the membership of the organizations conforming COPROFAM. COPROFAM represents 12 national organizations, 350 second- tier organizations and more than five thousand third-tier organizations representing family farmers, campesino and indigenous groups in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay - by a rough estimation 1,4 million families. In addition families affiliated to COPROFAMs member organizations, national and regional policies supporting family farming would supposedly benefit all family farmers in the Southern Cone.
