Women in India on the move
Jan 1, 2009-Dec 31, 2009
Andhra Pradesh is one of the poorest provinces in India. The Federation of farmers in Andhra Pradesh (FFA-AP) represents more than 1500 farm organisations and has 64,000 members of which 8432 are women. In the course of a working visit of Agriterra and Passage to FFA-AP, these figures gave inspiration to start a women's section for women in the Indian agricultural sector. This section will be managed by women only. Women are already fairly well organised; there are already existing structures from which the women section can be set up.
The women would like to be trained, and, above all, start economic activities that will increase their income. There are now special centres where women can learn sewing and embroidery and discuss social issues such as domestic violence and HIV/AIDS. It is precisely in these rural areas, where poverty has a tremendous impact on everyone, and the desire of women is to develop activities that bring more revenues. In the first instance a 1-year project proposal was suggested by FFA-AP, in consultation with Agriterra and Passage. Passage will be a part of the project financing to support women in India, not only for a more equal status of women, but also for a better place in rural areas and for a better future for their children.
Main goals of this project:
-strengthening the existing and creating new structures for women
-strengthening of local women's groups, and to establish a social forum
-organisation of economic activities that contribute to higher income, such as the keeping of poultry, embroidery, clothing, flowers and trees
- training (through social forum) to approximately 1800 women, to create awareness of, for example, women's rights, HIV/AIDS issues, health, and so on. In mid-2009 Passage/Agriterra will once again visit Andhra Pradesh to review the progress of this project and to give advice.
