Working Method

A key focus in the work that Agriterra carries out is the cooperation from farmer to farmer. We know that every organisation has accumulated experiences that can be useful to others. That is the reason why Agriterra mobilises the knowledge that Dutch agricultural organisations have, for the benefit of organisations in developing countries. We act as a mediator in the creation of various forms of cooperation amongst organisations in developing countries, and between these organisations and colleague organisations in the Netherlands.

We prefer that the organisations decide themselves how they can put this into practice. They are the ones who decide in which fields they would like to develop themselves further and which activities they wish to carry out. Agriterra offers its support in realising this. On the one hand, we offer financial support and counsel for the implementation of projects. On the other hand, we offer advice concerning strengthening trajectories and processes in general or for specific problems, such as techniques for cultivation.

In order to be able to offer adequate professional support, Agriterra set up AgriPool, a data base of experts. These experts are often a member, employee or manager of a rural people’s organisation and have expertise that is relevant to these kinds of organisations. This does not only include knowledge of forestry, crops, cattle breeding and fishery, but also for example, knowledge of micro-credits, management trainings and editorial skills necessary for drawing up publications for members.

In the period of 2007 to 2010, Agriterra carries out its activities within the framework of the ‘Farmers Fighting Poverty’ programme. The recommendations of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP) regarding the elimination of hunger and poverty are the basis of this programme that aims precisely at improving the situation of the common people, that is, of the farmer in the field.

More can be done if you work together rather than alone. That is why we work closely together with AgriCord, the alliance of agri-agencies that just like Agriterra, facilitate international cooperation for and by organised agriculture and rural populations. In addition, we work together in various international platforms.
