Learning alliance Ethiopia: Chain empowerment of farmer organisations

This proposal concerns the support of a joint process of learning-by-doing for empowering Ethiopian farmer organisations in the value chain.

OBJECTIVES and PRINCIPLES
The overall objective of the Learning Alliance is to empower Ethiopian farmer organizations to upgrade their position in the value chain, to strengthen the capacities of small-scale farmers and their farmer organizations, and to strengthen service providers in supporting and facilitating these processes of chain empowerment.
The proposal describes outcomes & outputs to be achieved by December 2009 in more detail, as well as impacts to be expected in the phase after December 2009.

The following 6 principles will be taken in account: being demand driven; focus on the total chain; clustering of farmer organizations and their service providers; learning by doing; integration with ongoing work; and institutional commitment for 2 years.

PARTICIPANTS
The participants to the Learning Alliance operate in so-called Learning clusters, which in fact are tandems: e.g. a coalition of a farmer organization with its service provider, with the former in the leading role. These tandems work on specific commodities and their value chains (lentils, soybean, incense and gum, dairy, wheat, honey, ...).
