Work area 5: Grassroots Participation

Grassroots’ participation has three important attachment points with the actual work of Agriterra:

1. From the ‘Farmers fighting poverty’-document the Work area ‘grassroot participation’ can be summarised as follows:

This programme element comprises cooperation with the FAO. With more than 20 organizations, we can set up People’s Participation Projects in nine local branches each. The FAO has developed a detailed programme plan that can be customized to meet the characteristics of the implementing organization and the country or province where the activities will take place. The goal is to work on forming group sat local level (2500 to 3000) so that rural people in poor areas develop joint economic activities.

2. One of the engagements of Agriterra in her FFP-programme is to enhance the participation at local level of the farmers’ organisation. The percentage of the funding intended for direct poverty reduction will increase from 30 to 61, 8%. This will also mean that we have to strengthen national organisations in their capacity to reach members at local level through service delivery. Again this can be considered as a big challenge.
