From 23-27 September 2024, Agriterra organised a training for members of the OUEZENA cooperative in Burkina Faso. They worked closely with these dedicated shea butter producers and the results were remarkable!
Shea butter plays an important role in generating income for women in Burkina Faso through their cooperatives. However, this activity only occupies 4 to 5 months of the year, making it vital to think about diversifying sources of income through new business ventures.
After developing a business plan to understand the profitability of the new activity, the emphasis was placed on training the people in charge of production. Convinced of the need to diversify their activities, the cooperative mobilised internal working capital amounting 631,850 CFA francs, including 477,500 CFA francs for the acquisition of equipment needed to manufacture cosmetic products and 154,350 CFA francs for shea butter.
This kind of activity has not only improved the women's income but also enabled them to have a permanent business throughout the year.
One of the most inspiring moments was the creation of this new business, which involves manufacturing and marketing toilet soap, washing powder and body ointment. After analysing the market, the cooperative identified opportunities to sell on the local market and internationally at fairs and exhibitions. Demand for soap and ointments is high, especially during the cooler months when the demand for ointment increases. By diversifying, the women will now have year-round income opportunities.
