Member of a Livestock Organisation and bulking maize as a group

06-03-2014 Mr. Ronyi Augustine Kasinzi is living in Myanzi. His farm is 18 kilometers from there. Every two days he is going to the farm. He is 57 years old, married and has 8 children (6 boys; 28, 26, 18, 15, 11 and 9 years) and 2 girls (23, 20). One son is working on the farm. The others are studying and three are out of school and working elsewhere. Ronyi's farm includes 1200 acres (300 hectare), 200 acres with maize and the rest uncultivated pastures. He is a livestock/dairy farmer and owns 200 cows and two local bulls. In the future he will use crossed bulls milk and meat. At the moment in the dry season he is not milking (only home consumption). He also owns 150 goats with the objective of selling the meat, he is not milking them. Normally he is milking about 30 cows. The average milk production is 65 kg every day.

Mr. Kasinzi sells every year 50 meat cows. Since 2005 he is member of the Livestock Rural People’s Organisation (216 members, of which 150 are women), which is member of Myanze ACE (also since 2005) and is the vice-president of Myanze ACE for 5 years now.

He owns different machineries: ploughs, 2 tractors, a grader and a disc hallow. He constructed a big drying place for the maize, borrows a tresher machine and has a big maize warehouse where other farmers can also keep their bags with maize production. They bulk the maize together in order to get a better price when sold on an individual base at the farm gate.

It is a family farm and make use of 20 laborers: 2 for the goats, 4 for the cows and the rest for arable farming. He could not show the costs and benefits, he makes use of a professional bookkeeper. He had a demonstration maize field with 2 experiments: one plot is PANNA hybrid seeds used and on the other with Longe 4 (for shorter seasons, not hybride). He bought the seeds in the input shop of Myanzi ACE. He is harvesting two times a year, once in February and the second time in July. He doesn’t use herbicides on the maize.

He is 2 years member of the Myanzi Peoples SACCO (saving and credit cooperative organization)  He does not make use of artificial insemination. He does burn the land after harvesting the maize.
