Be proud of being a strong woman farmer

05-08-2014 Members of the Rural Youth Group in Lagoro (northern part of Uganda) all have their own task. Aporo Miriana is responsible for research. With her mobile phone she calls the information center and the Kitgum District Farmers Association (KIDFA) for information on the current prizes for products like beans and maize. She travels to demonstration fields where they share information on the technologies used of upgraded hybrid seed, drying techniques use, harvesting etc. Aporo Miriana shares the prize information and the new knowledge with other 20 group members.

In the beginning of 2014 the group received a training from a field officer of KIDFA about better techniques for growing sunflower. The group will soon start a demonstration plot: a communal plot on one of the group members land where different agricultural practices will be tested e.g. precision seeding, weeding methods. The purpose of this plot is to learn from the different practices by closely keeping records of the different yields and to come to higher and better yields.

KIDFA gives attention on planning together as a family as well as sharing responsibilities and income. They trained groups like the Rural Youth Group in Lagoro on joint planning, financial management and entrepreneurship. Miriana now uses the joint planning approach where husband, wife and children plan and implement together. Mirana explains that the whole family decides on where to market the produce and how to share the earnings. Together with her husband and children she grows sunflower, cotton, millet, sorghum, sesame, groundnuts and beans.  She is proud of her knowledge and of how her family runs the farm. In 2004 they returned to their own hometown with nothing after 20 years of living in a refugee camp due to activities of Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Now she is a professional farmer and is still improving her business.
