Farmer-led businesses in Zambia

20-09-2015 Business advisors Dik van de Koolwijk and Marnix Sanderse visited Zambia in the week of 14 September to meet with (potential) clients, (potential) partners and other relevant stakeholders to start up its cooperative business development advisory services.

Agriterra has been active in Zambia for several years. In partnership with the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) and the affiliated Cotton Association of Zambia (CAZ), Agriterra’s support focused on lobby and advocacy and service provision to members. Besides, two district rice associations were supported in extension services to its members to improve productivity.

Recently, it was decided to also specifically start supporting farmer-led businesses in Zambia. In order to scope for potential clients, business advisors Dik van de Koolwijk  and Marnix Sanderse travelled to Zambia.

The team had meetings with among others SNV, AgriProFocus, Solidaridad, Zanaco Bank, but also with Zambia Cooperative Federation, Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) and some of its affiliated commodity associations like the Dairy Association of Zambia.

Potential sectors are dairy, cotton, rice, honey, whereas maize is the most important staple food. The cooperative sector has faced quite some challenges, but there are opportunities for Agriterra to add value through its tremendous network of professionals from the cooperative agri-food sector on themes like business development, financial management and governance.

From the beginning of November, Marnix Sanderse will be based in Lusaka to advise our clients. To follow on progress of activities in Zambia, follow the advisors on Twiiter:
