Ethiopian leaders learn from cooperative entrepreneurship in the Netherlands

12-03-2014 From the 16 to the 21st of March Agriterra will receive a high level delegation from Ethiopia, among which is the minister of agriculture Tefera Derbew, who will come for a study tour on cooperative entrepreneurship. Leaders from the Ethiopian agriculture world will come to the Netherlands to get inspired at several companies, among which are FloraHolland, Rabobank, CZAV, COSUN and FrieslandCampina. Another aspect of the visit is to learn our cooperative history and legislation and to what extent this can be used to help improve Ethiopia. Agriterra is organising this visit together with the Federal Cooperative Agency (FCA: government institute responsibly for cooperation development) and the Dutch development aid organisation SNV in Ethiopia.

Cooperation country
Cooperatives have always been important in the Dutch agricultural sector. The Netherlands is one of the most cooperative countries of Europe. Approximately 68% of the agrarian products (excluding flowers) are being retailed by means of a cooperation, the highest percentage in Europe after Finland (74%). A cooperative is an association of members who want to jointly provide in their economic, social and or cultural needs when developing a venture from which they are the owner and administrators. Well-known Dutch cooperatives are FrieslandCampina and Rabobank. Ethiopia is also a real cooperative country. In all corners of the country you can encounter the cooperative business organisation. Cooperatives can play an important role in reforming and improving the agrarian economy in Ethiopia. To achieve this, the FCA wants to modernise the legislation and the representation around cooperatives in Ethiopia.

Cooperative entrepreneurship
During the study week the minister, decision makers, and policy makers from Ethiopia will be informed about company models, advancement of member capital, reinforcing member ties and separating the cooperation matters from the commercial activities.
