Sustainable Development

For cooperatives to thrive in the long run, they need more than strong governance and financial management. They must also build resilience by shaping their own future, securing resources, and designing services that meet both present and future needs. The Sustainable Development training category equips cooperative leaders with the knowledge and skills to advocate for farmers’ interests, create services that are both socially and environmentally sustainable, and strengthen financial independence through internal capitalisation.

FACT – Farmers advocacy consultation tool

Advocacy is a powerful tool for farmer organisations. This module trains cooperative leaders in the use of the FACT methodology, giving them the ability to influence policies, represent their members effectively, and make farmers’ voices heard where it matters most. Strong advocacy ensures that cooperatives can contribute to shaping fair policies and creating a supportive environment for farming communities.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Apply the FACT methodology to strengthen advocacy strategies.
  • Represent farmer interests effectively in policy dialogues and consultations.
  • Build coalitions and partnerships to amplify their voice.
  • Prepare evidence-based arguments to influence decision-makers.
  • Engage members in advocacy processes to ensure ownership and legitimacy.

Sustainable services

A cooperative’s services are its lifeline. This module helps cooperatives design and adapt services that are both sustainable and responsive to members’ needs, while also considering their wider impact on the environment and society. By developing innovative and responsible services, cooperatives can remain relevant to their members and play a leading role in sustainable rural development.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify members’ evolving needs and design services that respond effectively.
  • Integrate social and environmental considerations into service design.
  • Develop services that balance financial sustainability with community impact.
  • Innovate to create added value for members and local communities.
  • Monitor and evaluate services to ensure continuous improvement.

Internal capitalisation

Financial independence is essential for resilient cooperatives. This module supports cooperatives in raising funds internally, reducing dependency on external finance, and creating a stronger sense of ownership among members. By mobilising their own resources, cooperatives can secure long-term growth and stability while reinforcing trust within the membership.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Explore different models of internal capitalisation and their benefits.
  • Mobilise member contributions effectively and transparently.
  • Strengthen financial independence by reducing reliance on external funding.
  • Build a culture of ownership and responsibility through member investment.
  • Use internal funds strategically to support cooperative growth and resilience.
