From Dependence to Enterprise: Farmers Embrace a New Cooperative Mindset in Ghana

Across Ghana, Agriterra's Farmers-Focused Transformation(FFT) programme is helping farmer organizations become stronger, more resilient, and increasingly business-oriented. The programme recognizes that sustainable cooperatives are built not only through investments and services, but also through a change in mindset among members and leaders.

This transformation was recently reflected during an engagement with Boadua District Cooperative Cocoa Farming and Marketing Union Limited in Ghana's Eastern Region.

Following an earlier My.Coop leadership training for union executives, Agriterra worked with the union to expand the conversation to society leaders and farmer representatives across its network. More than onehundred(100+) representatives from nearly sixty (60) societies came together to discuss leadership, ownership, participation, and the future direction of their cooperative.

While many participants arrived with different experiences and expectations, a common theme emerged throughout the discussions: the future success of the cooperative depends on members seeing it not simply as a source of support, but as a business that they collectively own and must actively grow.

A Shift from Support-Seeking to Enterprise Building

For many years, cooperatives across the agricultural sector have often been associated with accessing support, projects, and external interventions. While these remain important, participants were challenged to think beyond this traditional perspective.

Discussions focused on what it means to run a cooperative as a sustainable enterprise, where members contribute to growth, participate indecision-making, build trust, and support business opportunities that create value for everyone.

Members reflected on the need to move away from a culture of waiting for solutions from government, development programmes, or external institutions, and instead take greater ownership of the future of their organizations.

The conversation encouraged participants to view the cooperative as a platform for generating opportunities, strengthening livelihoods, and building long-term sustainability through collective action.

Building a New Generation of Cooperative Change Agents

One of the most encouraging outcomes of the engagement was the response from participants themselves.

Representatives left with a clearer understanding of their responsibility not only to their own societies but also to the wider cooperative movement. Through the engagement, a broader network of cooperative champions emerged, capable of supporting the dissemination of information, encouraging participation, and strengthening engagement within their respective societies.

Follow-up visits to selected societies confirmed that these conversations were already beginning to influence discussions at community level. Members showed increased awareness of cooperative responsibilities and demonstrated a stronger willingness to contribute to the growth and development of their organizations.

Building the Future from Within

The engagement reinforced a simple but important lesson: lasting cooperative growth begins from within.

Strong farmer organizations are built when members understand their role, trust their institutions, participate actively, and work together towards shared economic goals.

The union is now exploring ways of strengthening communication and learning structures across its societies to ensure that information, opportunities, and responsibilities are shared more effectively among members.

As one participant remarked during the discussions:

"We now understand that a cooperative is not just a place to receive support. It is our business, and its success depends on how committed we are as members. We have a responsibility to take this message back to our societies and help build a stronger cooperative."

For Agriterra, this reflects exactly what farmer-led transformation is intended to achieve: empowering farmers to take ownership of their future and building cooperatives that are capable of creating value, generating opportunities, and growing sustainably over time.

The journey is still ongoing, but the mindset shift has begun. And when farmers move from dependence to enterprise, stronger cooperatives become possible.
