In Burkina Faso, tomato farming plays an important role in food security and local incomes. Yet many farmer cooperatives still face challenges when it comes to professional farm management, market connections, and access to quality inputs. The Building a Strong Horticulture Sector in Africa project supports tomato farmer cooperatives to strengthen their organisations, improve productivity, and create better market opportunities for their members. Together with Stichting De Eik, Agriterra is working to empower cooperatives that show strong ambition but still need guidance to professionalise their operations and services. By investing in these emerging organisations, the project helps farmers move closer to sustainable growth and long-term prosperity.

The project focuses on practical support that helps cooperatives and their members grow stronger and more resilient. Activities include:
β

Youth engagement is an important part of the project. By establishing five youth councils, young farmers are encouraged to actively participate in cooperative leadership and decision-making.
In addition, four demonstration plots provide practical learning spaces where farmers can test improved tomato production techniques and share knowledge within their communities.
With stronger cooperatives, better farming practices, and improved market linkages, tomato farmers can increase productivity, strengthen food security, and build more resilient rural communities.
