Accelerating Climate Resilient Food Systems in Ethiopia (ACRFSE)

The ACRFSE project is committed to strengthening the climate and financial resilience of 10,000 soybean, maize, and teff farmers and their cooperatives. With the support of the Denmark Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the partnership of Export Trading Group (ETG), the project helps farmers withstand climate shocks and build stronger organisations.

Hectares of farmland improved for agro-ecological sustainability

By tackling post-harvest losses caused by aflatoxin, introducing climate-smart practices, and improving storage solutions, farmers are better able to reduce food loss and meet growing market demand for sustainable, traceable produce. ETG will source 6,500 metric tonnes of sustainably produced crops from 10 cooperatives under 2 unions, expand processing into nutritious food and animal feed, and pilot the use of agri-waste for biochar to improve soil health and water retention.

Key interventions and lasting impact

  • Cooperative and farmer capacity building: Ten primary cooperatives and two unions are being professionalised with Agriterra’s support. Farmers receive training in agroecology, governance, finance, and business development, while mentorship programmes help women and youth step into leadership roles and launch new services through dedicated councils. Food loss is reduced through improved storage facilities and the use of PICS bags.
  • Nutrition and social benefits: Nutritious food reaches 20,000 schoolchildren through Mary’s Meals International, while 10,000 households benefit from nutrition awareness training.
  • Monitoring and learning: The University of Copenhagen leads monitoring, evaluation, baseline, and impact assessments. This ensures valuable learning loops for partners and wider sector stakeholders.

Partnerships that make change possible

The project brings together a strong consortium, each contributing unique expertise:

  • Agriterra leads the professionalisation of farmer cooperatives and unions, ensuring their growth and resilience.
  • ETG sources sustainable produce, manages processing into food and feed, and develops biochar solutions.
  • The University of Copenhagen drives research, learning, and capacity building.
  • Mary’s Meals International delivers nutritious school meals to thousands of children.

Together, this partnership takes a fully integrated value chain approach, strengthening climate resilience, food security, and nutrition for farmers and communities across Ethiopia.
