Transforming Livelihoods through Climate Resilient and Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains (CRLCSA)

Climate change is reshaping the way farmers grow food and sustain their livelihoods. In Western Kenya, the Transforming Livelihoods through Climate Resilient, Low Carbon, Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains in the Lake Region Economic Bloc, Kenya (CRLCSA) project is helping farmer organisations and smallholder farmers turn challenges into opportunities by building climate resilience across key value chains such as coffee, tea, dairy, poultry, fruits and vegetables. By empowering farmer organisations, strengthening extension services and introducing climate-smart practices, we are working together towards a thriving tomorrow where local prosperity and sustainability go hand in hand.

Building pathways for low carbon, climate resilient farming

The project focuses on transforming agricultural value chains into low carbon and climate resilient pathways. This will be realised through four key areas of action:

  • Enhancing public agro-climate extension services at county level so that farmers receive the guidance and support they need.
  • Restoring degraded agricultural landscapes in the Lake Region Economic Bloc by putting landscape management plans into practice.
  • Increasing smallholder resilience and production with climate-smart technologies delivered through farmer organisations.
  • Ensuring climate resilient value chains can grow sustainably by introducing new business models, opening up access to finance and exploring opportunities such as carbon markets.

Together, these interventions aim to protect natural resources, improve food security and create long-term opportunities for farmer families in the region.

Partnering up for impact

This initiative brings together strong partnerships that combine international expertise with local knowledge. The project is led by FAO Kenya as the accredited and executing entity, with the Ministry of Agriculture Kenya contributing both co-financing and activities on the ground. The Government of Denmark also provides co-financing, while the Cooperative Partnership for Climate Smart Food and Forestry — including LTO Nederland, SEGES Innovation, the Danish Agricultural Food Council and MTK — supports peer-to-peer knowledge transfer.

By joining forces, these partners ensure that farmer organisations and communities in Western Kenya have the tools, knowledge and connections they need to adapt, prosper and sustain resilient food systems for generations to come.

Cooperation is key

Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.

Building on the success of the Dutch cooperative sector, we strengthen farmer organisations. Together we achieve your sustainability goals and create lasting impact as we do so. A win-win for all involved
