Indonesian rice farmers invest in their own cooperative
11-01-2023The members of Citra Kina Raya (CIKI) cooperative on Java are gradually buying shares into their cooperative to invest on a processing factory.
Mr. Kuswinaryo, chairman of CIKI: "Together with Agriterra we changed the mindset of the farmers, so they now understand that the cooperative is not a social but a business organisation.”
This was a success. “Since we cooperated in 2017, the turnover of the cooperative has multiplied by 6 times”, says Tjandra Irawan, cooperative advisor Agriterra. “Farmers also benefit from CIKI because they own shares in the cooperative. They gain access to seeds, a new sustainable storage facility for their rice and buyers willing to pay a good price.”
The ambition of CIKI is to be market leader in specialty rice in Indonesia.
