In September 2020, Agriterra started a transformative journey with the Limuru Dairy Cooperative in Kenya, which has 11,000 dedicated dairy farmers as members. Producing over 30,000 liters of milk daily, Limuru Dairy aimed to add value to its raw milk by producing Extended Shelf Life (ESL) products. However, they faced challenges in accessing financing.
Recognising Limuru Dairy’s potential, Agriterra provided comprehensive support. This included developing a feasibility study to justify investment in ESL products, securing grant funding from the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP), crafting a solid sales and marketing plan, and enhancing the cooperative’s extension services. By professionalising the extension department, Agriterra aimed to equip Limuru Dairy with the necessary tools to consistently deliver raw milk and achieve their vision.

Securing funding for the ESL project was a significant challenge, with commercial loans being too costly for the cooperative and its farmers. Undeterred, Agriterra’s cooperative advisors, Diana Macharia and Noah Ngetich, led a grant proposal to the World Bank through NARIGP, aiming to raise approximately EUR 911,000. In November 2023, Limuru Dairy received EUR 685,118.42, a substantial boost for their ESL line.

With the grant secured, Agriterra and Limuru Dairy developed a 2024 action plan focusing on establishing the ESL line and expanding market share—a key goal for the cooperative. Agriterra continued to support skill-building initiatives, including hiring a Human Resource officer and conducting Quality Assurance training. Additionally, Agriterra facilitated the import of essential equipment for the ESL line, ensuring smooth and efficient production.
With improved infrastructure and diversified product offerings, Limuru Dairy is better positioned to capitalise on market opportunities. The cooperative anticipates increased revenue streams, ultimately improving the livelihoods of its member farmers. This milestone is a testament to the power of collaboration and strategic planning.
Agriterra celebrates this significant achievement with Limuru Dairy and looks forward to continuing its support. Together, they aim to drive sustainable growth and innovation in Kenya's agricultural sector, setting a precedent for other dairy cooperatives.
