Good news! Agriterra decided to closure their project with The Ethiopian Poultry Producers and Processors Association (EPPPA), because EPPPA doesn’t need support anymore.
The Ethiopian Poultry Producers and Processors Association (EPPPA) is a membership-based sector association established in 2010 and initially by 10 volunteer poultry producers in Bishoftu town. Currently, its membership increased to 48 Ethiopian poultry farmers, ranging from small to big enterprises.
It is established to provide services for its members and assist the development of the poultry sector in Ethiopia. EPPPA has a vision to see where complex Ethiopian poultry sub-sector get resolved and its members are able to become internationally competitive.
In order to professionalise EPPPA, Agriterra in partnership with Agribusiness Support Facility (ABSF) in 2014 developed a funded Action Plan towards strengthening and establishing the management function of the association through subsidising management staff, setting up a governance structure, technical backstopping to help the association analyse and understand the poultry sub-sector, development of 3 year strategic plan, and various trainings and exchange visits.
EPPPA implemented the 2014 Action Plan very well and made significant improvements in its operations. Right now (2017) Agriterra decided to closure their project with EPPPA, because EPPPA doesn’t need support anymore.
The results:
- The support of Agriterra enabled EPPPA to function as an important institution and ensured strong representation for enhancing policy environment and delivering efficient wide range services to members through which foundation laid to enhance production and productivity within the subsector.
- EPPPA has enrolled various lobby activities, which resulted among others into a tax-lift on poultry feed, an enormous gain for poultry producer.
- Using the unreserved support of Agriterra, EPPPA managed to enhance services to members and the entire private poultry subsector at large.
- Unlike the previous year’s EPPPA managed to expand its membership base that has increased by 25% during the budget year which in the long run may bring the Association to be self-sustained.
- Using the various platforms EPPPA management and the Board have been advocating for favourable business environments, better technology introduction to its members, creating access to training and other capacity building activities. Moreover, the platform was a great opportunity to create better market link for input supply, disease prevention and strengthen public private partnership.
- Through a continued training and awareness creation effort poultry producers and processors are becoming more convinced to play a vital role in stabilising the market for poultry product and ensure customer satisfaction.
